We have received information that credit unions continue to report that members are receiving phone calls indicating their credit/debit card will be or has been deactivated due to inactivity or for other various reasons. The person making the call requests card data or personal information to verify ownership of the account before the card can be re-activated. These phone calls are fraudulent and members are advised to hang up immediately.
If a member has already received a message and has given out account or personal information, they should contact the credit union immediately.
It has also been reported that members are receiving text messages which state that their debit or credit card has been deactivated. They are then asked to call a specific number within their area code to reactivate the card(s).
It should be noted that the incoming / originating number on caller ID or text message can be fabricated to appear as though the call/text is from a legitimate source or to hide the actual number on the screen. Preventative measures remain the same with all similar type scams:
- Verify the source of the call.
- Never give out personal information or confidential data over the telephone or via a text message.
- Contact the credit union and/or local law enforcement if such a call or text message is received.
